UNITY and MULTIPLICITY is an exciting and inspired world class art collaborative and at its foundation is the supposition that there is an intrinsic connection between all people everywhere. Psychologist, Carl Jung and writer, Joseph Campbell revealed that our common archetypes, epic narratives and mythologies do extend into our contemporary era.
With edge and individuality, these internationally exhibited artists new exhibition is titled “The Epic Body.” This exhibition explores, interrogates and deconstructs the body as sign, symbol and icon. In this era of global communication and cultural exchange art has evoked new and provocative interpretations of the body internationally. Consciously or sub-consciously, as artists we leave cultural markers everywhere. Captured in digital art, mixed media, photography, sculpture, ceramics and paintings these works cover ancient, modern and contemporary perspectives on the physical form that has been influenced by culture. The exhibition is comprised of contemporary Neo “primitive” works that draw from our primal self and intuition; Modern constructs that reflect the radical changes in philosophies, perception, painting methods and conventional aesthetics during the Modern era; and Postmodern aesthetic philosophies that expand the previous era limited use of materials and media and the rise of anti-aesthetics, intuitive arrangements, conceptual art, and identity politics. With the death of the subject and the deconstruction of the body some artists interpretations of the body were only a notion. Postmodern artworks in the post-civil rights error mirrored these same philosophies and also gave rise to complex and ironic interpretations of the body. Lastly, the concept, “Transtexuality,” has shown how linguistic slang, cultural gestures and Hip-Hop culture itself has been transferred from one cultural body to other cultural bodies internationally. This influence has transferred to all the arts and it has also transformed marketing itself.
A full timeline of exciting and interesting interpretations of the body have become the substance of our artwork. The groups many forms of expression also extend to fractured narratives, prose, and poetry that attend some of the artworks. With widespread appeal, a full kaleidoscope of images, forms and ideas are expressed reflecting a thread that runs through the human condition that connects all people everywhere.

Unity and Multiplicity is an exciting and inspired international art collaborative that is based in Los Angeles. The group has experience exhibiting art, curating art exhibitions, and teaching art in the community. We have also created exhibition catalogs and sent out press releases while stimulating national exposure with a corresponding blog and website. Formally (Articulation and Artitude) we had joined with an art outreach program, The Wanda Wallace Foundation, to teach art workshops in our local community. We have also inspired and curated art exhibits for the program. For our community exhibition, “Juneteenth Celebration” in Rogers Park, we received a positive review in Animation Magazine Online. Independently, we have exhibited in art museums and galleries locally and internationally. Our mission is to jolt the mind out of our daily routine by taking art to new places. We exhibit a full kaleidoscope of images and ideas inspired by supposition that there is a thread that runs through the human condition that connects all people everywhere.

Bridgitte Montgomery’s Trilogy, Amazing Graces, is an African American (Black) version of the many European interpretations of “Three Graces.” The trilogy shows #1 three black women in a natural spiritual state of grace. #2 shows three black women whose minds and bodies carry all the painful issues observed in past and current print media. #3 shows three black women’s bodies that have become void vehicles for projected ideology while their true selves are not being seen.
ALLEN TENG
“Old Painter” was made with thin pieces of clay hanging onto welded wires sticking out from a central steel armature. This method of making a figure was initially adopted to find an alternative way of making a voluminous figure whose walls were thin enough to fire in a kiln. I wanted to avoid the task of hollowing out a solid clay figure made by modeling or going through the slow, technical process of using the coil technique. To my surprise, this method allowed me to intuitively create a naturalistic impression of a figure. This impression of naturalism comes about, I feel, from not having to worry about mechanical anatomy. Each individual piece approximates the position of folds, protrusions and concavities throughout a figure’s body and clothing. They are only approximations - but our perception puts them all together into an immediate recognition of the figure’s naturalism.
Sculptor, Allen Teng’s, Neo Primitive complex and ironic forms of the body are central to this exhibition. While thinking of the abstract qualities of sculptural forms, materials and processes his representational objects initiate a process and commence perimeters to his work. Graphic archetypes from life, media, or memory act as a motif for sculptural exploration. Allen hopes to bind the cliché to the sinuous qualities of matter and human labor thereby creating a work that captivates curiosity, interest, and excitement. In Red Figure his spontaneous process wrenches from the collective unconscious explicitly candid forms of the body that coalesce with both our primordial roots and future potential.
